Kafeel Khan’s fight to continue till demands are met

Shillong, Nov 22: Dr Kafeel Khan said on Monday his struggle to get justice would continue till the Uttar Pradesh government fulfilled his demands.

His demands are revoking his termination, CBI probe into the BRD oxygen tragedy, and a public apology from the Uttar Pradesh government to the grieving parents who lost their children and compensation.

“Strange as it may seem, the attempts to intimidate me into silence have made me all the more conscious of what I owe to society. If I had remained silent in order to keep my job, even as little children perished and their parents mourned, could I call myself a good citizen? An ethical doctor,” Khan said during a press meet.

Khan said the state government terminated him November 9 while the case is pending in the Allahabad High Court. The next hearing is on December 7.

“Despite being cleared by not one but several committees: I am the only one of the eight accused to get terminated rest all got reinstated,” he said.

Khan reiterated that there was a shortage of liquid oxygen for 54 hours at the BRD Medical College from August 10-12, 2017, and “I had indeed arranged jumbo oxygen cylinders to save many children from dying”.

He also mentioned that 23 children and 18 adults died on August 10, 2017.

“The Allahabad High Court, in an order dated September 9, 2021, stayed second suspension (I was suspended twice on charges of forcibly treating patients on Bahraich district hospital and criticising government policies). I filed a writ petition on 3 July 2021, against my first suspension. On July 29, Honourable Justice Yashwant Verma asked the UP government to ‘justify the continuance of the order of suspension which has continued for more than four years’,” he added.
