Karbi students’ body opposed to Assam-Meghalaya ‘give & take’ policy

Diphu (Karbi Anglong), Oct 15: The Karbi Students’ Association – Central Executive Committee (KSA-CEC) has submitted a memorandum to Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), drawing his attention to the recent incident at Tapat and other critical issues affecting the people of West Karbi Anglong, particularly those residing along the Assam–Meghalaya border.

The KSA-CEC has urged the CEM to take sustained measures to ensure the safety, dignity and rights of the border residents, while also reinforcing the territorial integrity and governance of the region under KAAC jurisdiction.

Referring to the 1951 land transfers based on the Bordoloi Committee recommendations, the KSA-CEC rejected the claim of the Meghalaya government and some pressure groups that Block I and Block II of Jaintia Hills belonged to the hill state.

It also “strongly opposed” the ‘give and take’ policy in land transfer between the Assam and Meghalaya governments.

The KSA-CEC expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity, tension and administrative neglect faced by the Karbis in the border areas.

“The incident at Tapat highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate intervention from the authorities,” said KSA-CEC publicity secretary Devinson Kro.

“The KSA-CEC stands in solidarity with the affected people and remains committed to defending the interests and identity of the Karbi community. The Association calls upon the KAAC, the Government of Assam, and all concerned stakeholders to act with seriousness and resolve to restore peace and security in the region,” Kro said.
