
Shillong, June 6: The high-court appointed judicial committee has asked the state government to close down the illegal coke plants in the state.
The one-man panel headed by justice (retd) BP Katakey held a meeting in the city on Monday to take stock of the subsequent developments after he had given directions to the government to ensure implementation of guidelines of Supreme Court and NGT on illegal coal mining and transportation.
He said during discussion, the feedback from the government was that only one coke plant was operating in the state .
“I have asked the government to stop the operation of all illegal coke plants as the source of coal used in coke plants is through illegal mining of coal”, he said
The committee was informed that there are around 80 coke plants in the state.
