KHADC passes resolution against uniform civil code

Shillong, June 24: The KHADC on Saturday passed a resolution opposing the uniform civil code.

KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem brought the resolution on the first day of the Budget session in the House opposing the move of the Centre to implement uniform civil code.

Syiem said the uniform civil code will dilute the customs, traditional practices, inheritance, marriage and religious freedom.

“Therefore this House now do resolve to urge the government of India not to implement uniform civil code within the jurisdiction of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council inorder to safeguard and protect our interest as provided under the sixth schedule to the Constitution of India”, he said.

Leader of Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne also supported the resolution by reiterating that the uniform civil code will affect the customary practices of the indigenous people.

Senior member Bindo Lanong and deputy CEM PN Syiem also supported the resolution.
