KHADC to implement Act to empower farmers

Shillong, Aug 17: The district council has decided to implement The Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Establishment, Management and Control of Markets) (Second Amendment) Regulation, Act 2021, which seeks to protect the interest of the farmers in the region.

“It is our duty to notify and implement this Act with immediate effect. This Act will be applicable in the whole of the district council’s jurisdiction,” KHADC EM In-charge Market Grace Mary Kharpuri told reporters on Thursday.

Kharpuri said it will address the many problems faced by the farmers including deduction of weight of agricultural produce and it will also look into the interest of the livestock farmers as well.

The executive committee will also come up with a minimum support price to  help the farmers.

The Act, passed by the KHADC on March 2, 2021 was approved by the Governor on July 26, this year.

The objective of the Act is to promote and facilitate the marketing of agricultural produce and livestock and also bring more accountability and transparency in the implementation of the regulation.

The Agriculture Produce and Livestock Marketing Facilitation Sub-Committee (APLMFSC) will be constituted to ensure that all the legal rights and privileges of the farmers relating to the marketing of agricultural produce and livestock are honoured.

The sub-committee will take measures for the prevention of purchase and sale of commodities below the minimum support price fixed by the District Council, from time to time.

Later, the KHADC CEM, P S Syiem , Dy CEM P N Syiem and members of Executive Committee visited the Governor at Raj Bhavan.

The team thanked the governor for his support and for approving the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Establishment, Management, and Control of Markets) (Second Amendment) Regulation Act, 2021 and other bills passed by the KHADC.
