Lack of public support for Meghalaya football team

Shillong, March 11: In the absence of publicity by the government, public participation was thin at the event at Fire Brigade Ground to facilitate the state football team for becoming ruuner -up at the Santosh Trophy championship.

There were many empty chairs at the venue, indicating that publicity for the support of the event was lacking

Meghalaya created history by clinching the Silver Medal and the Kamala Gupta Trophy in the  76th National Football Championship Hero Santosh Trophy at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh on March 4. The team qualified for the final round of the Santosh Trophy for the first time since the inception of the state.

The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs organised a road show from Mawlai Madan Heh and the team proceeded  through Jaiaw Jingthangbriew, Jaiaw St Joseph, Jaiaw Langsning, Jaiaw Pdeng, Mawkhar Main Road, Motphran, Police Bazar, AG’s Office, Additional Secretariat, Barik, Malki Point, Dhanketi, Don Bosco Square, Laitumkhrah Beat House with flash mobs taking place in six locations and finally reaching Fire Brigade Ground for the  felicitation ceremony.

Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Shakliar Warjri and President, Meghalaya Football Association, Larsing Ming spoke on the occasion. The players were felicitated with cash awards as per the government’s cash awards scheme for sports achievers.
