Landslide-induced casualty rises to five in state

Four members of a family die in Mawphlang Block

Shillong,June 16: Landslide triggered by heavy rain caused the death of five persons in the state, on Thursday morning.

While four siblings of a family were killed in  landslide at Laitlarem village, Mawphlang Block  after their house was damaged ( in picture), a mother of  two minor children identified as Hilsyntimery Marwein (24 ) died at Jashiar,  South West Khasi Hills in a similar incident.

Under Mawphlang, the siblings Wallambiang Kharmyndai (9), Banlumlang Kharmyndai (6) and Ribalin Kharmyndai (4) died on the spot, while another female member of the family, Daphilabanri Kharmyndai(8) died in transit to Sohiong PHC.

The father and another 12 year-old-son were injured while the mother and a baby of one year and six months were unhurt.

For the past few days, several houses were also affected due to landslide in Ri Bhoi district and in Gambegre block in West Garo Hills.

The death toll due to rain-related incidents has gone up to 18 while 12 were injured from April 1 till date.

Over 5.43 lakh people in 590 villages have been affected while 3,904 houses were damaged (fully–249, partially – 3384 and severely -74) during the past three months.

The state has also witnessed infrastructure damages on public roads, shops, schools and anganwadi centres.
