Laying of pipes delays Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme phase III

Shillong, April 9: Laying of pipes delays distribution of water under the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS)- phase III.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the PHE Minister Marcuise Marak said the project is nearing completion, with water already reaching the treatment plant,.

“The pumping from phase-III, from the Mawphlang damsite is already completed and it has been successfully tested recently, and water has reached the treatment plant,” Marak said

“The work is still pending on the distribution side, including laying of pipes”, he added.

The minister expressed hope that the project would be completed soon.

The works in some localities are still pending, but we are hoping to complete it,” Marak said.

He declined to provide thr updated figures on the revised expenditure incurred for GSWSS-III, stating the information is not available with him.

New Shillong & Tura projects 

The construction of the dam for the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme will be completed by next year.

Marak said, “I have gone to see the dam site, the work is going on 24×7, and we are hoping to complete this dam by next year.”

He said other components of the project are in progress.

The minister said that land acquisition issues had previously delayed the project, but these have now been resolved, allowing work to proceed in full swing.

On the Tura Water Supply Scheme, Marak said objections over the dam construction site had been resolved, paving the way for work to start soon.

“There were certain issues where the dam was to be constructed, but there was some objection. Now it is resolved, and work will be starting very soon,” he added.
