Lok Sabha speaker appeals for peace in NE as Manipur bleeds

Mayralborn Syiem asks members to pray for the neighbouring state

Shillong, July 29: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has appealed to the people of the North East to maintain peace and harmony in the context of ongoing unrest in Manipur.

Concluding his speech at the opening of commonwealth parliamentary association meeting for the North East legislators on Saturday at Rilbong here, he appealed for peace in the region without mentioning Manipur and added that no one wants things which harm the region.

“Recent incidents in the North East are extremely painful for us as human beings and as a society. It is our moral duty as an individual and as a society not to give pain to anyone and not to hurt anyone’s dignity”, he said.

In the process of development, we should not deviate from path of human values and ethics and it is the collective responsibility of all of us to protect our tradition, heritage and culture, he added.

A parliamentary delegation comprising 21 MPs of Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) is camping in Manipur to assess the situation.

While taking part in the discussion on natural disaster management, UDP legislator Mayralborn Syiem said special prayers should be offered either on Saturday or Sunday for five or ten minutes for peace and harmony in Manipur by the gathering irrespective of religious affiliations.
