Maintenance of accounts by ADCs pending for 30 years: CM

Shillong, June 9: The three autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the state are yet to give detailed reports sought by the state government regarding the maintenance of their respective books of accounts.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters on Thursday that the maintenance of books of accounts has been an issue that has been plaguing the district councils for a very long time for over 20-30 years and that the issue has not suddenly come up this year.

He said the district council affairs minister Lahkmen Rymbui had conducted a meeting of the department and had issued instructions to write to the three district councils to give detailed reports on the matter.

The chief minister however said the government is waiting for the reply of the district councils as none of them has responded till date.

“Steps need to be taken to ensure reforms are done and proper maintenance of books of accounts are being done at their level but as I said they are autonomous in nature and therefore, it is their responsibility to ensure that they take necessary steps,” he added.

‘CM of MDA not of NPP’

To a question on the coalition partners trying to shirk responsibility on many issues, Conrad said he is not chief minister of NPP but chief minister of MDA and that he is ready to take full responsibility for all that happens in the government.

“I have no issues with that. As the chairman of the MDA I always say that I take full responsibility and it is my responsibility at the end of the day to always ensure that whatever problems are there we resolve it so it may not be some issues directly under the departments that I am handling but as the head of the government I am responsible for all that happens,” he said..

Welcome differences

Sangma said some individual statements happen because in a six-party coalition it is natural for different views to come in “but that’s fine as long as in the larger picture we all know that we have to work and sometimes differences may occur but we need to resolve it in amicable manner.”
