Man arrested for vandalising ATMs in city

Shillong, June 28:  A 29-year-old man was arrested for vandalising many ATMs in the city.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the SP (city) Vivek Syiem said on the evening of June 28 after investigating on a series of ATMs being vandalised with the aim to steal cash, which occurred during load shedding hours, many cases have been reported and registered in various police stations.

A team from Rynjah police station led by Dy. S.P (L&O) Jyoti Wahlang, and ASP  Dewansh Pandey, arrested the 29-year-old accused involved in the cases. Preliminary interrogation has revealed that he committed the acts of crime in the ATMs at Madanrting, Laitumkhrah, Rynjah and Laban. The clothes, bag and umbrella which were used while committing the crime were seized from his house. The total damage is worth over Rs 10 lakh.

The accused person has been first arrested in connection with Madanrting PS Case No. 60(6)2023 U/S 427/380 IPC R/W Sec 3(2) (e) PDPP Act and forwarded to the court. Investigation will ascertain role of other accomplices and modus operandi in opening ATMs, the police official said.
