Manipur cries resonate in UP House, mar proceedings
Lucknow, Aug 7 (UNI): Proceedings of both houses of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature on the first day of the monsoon session on Monday were marred by the opposition’s uproar over violence in Manipur after which the assembly and the council were adjourned till 11 am on Tuesday after completing legislative business.
As the proceedings started in the legislative council after condoling the demise of former members Samajwadi Party (SP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Congress members demanded a debate on the violence in Manipur and to pass a motion condemning the incident.
However, Speaker Satish Mahana turned down the request stating that neither there was a tradition nor any rule to discuss the events of other states in the house. On this, the members of SP and RLD came into the well of the houses and indulged in sloganeering.
Leader of the Opposition Akhilesh Yadav said that a debate should be held on the violence in Manipur as the issue was related to the safety of women. He asked why the issue should not be condemned in the house when it has been condemned all over the world.
He said that it was a serious issue. While hinting towards Leader of the House Yogi Adityanath he said that he must be having some compulsions due to which he was not speaking on the issue. He said that the Leader of the House should condemn the incident as a true Yogi.
On this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna accused the opposition of wasting the time of the house and said that no resolution to condemn major incidents which took place during the SP regime was passed. He said that law and order in the state have become a role model in the country, which other states are trying to replicate.
Speaker Mahana said that neither the incidents of Bengal and Kerala would be discussed in the house, nor permission would be given to bring a motion condemning the incident of Manipur. He said there is an assembly and Lok Sabha to discuss the incident in Manipur.
He said that issues related to the state will only be discussed in the house. He said that most of the questions are asked by the opposition members only in Question Hour, to which the government is sitting to answer them.
Mahana said that instead of making the house a platform for politics, the members should put the problems of their area on the table of the house so that the welfare of the people can be done. As the uproar continued in the house the Speaker repeated that no debate could be held on the Manipur issue. He said that no debate on incidents happening in other states could be held in the house.
As the opposition members continued to create a ruckus, the Speaker took questions from the members and 13 bills were also tabled in the house. The Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly-2023 were also laid on the table of the House amid the uproar.
Amid continued uproar by the opposition members, the Speaker adjourned the house for half an hour at 11.35 am which was extended for another 10 minutes.
