Shillong, Sept 19: The Mawlynnong Runsafari Half Marathon witnessed over 200 runners from India and abroad competing in the picturesque countryside along the Indo-Bangla border on Saturday last.
The marathon was divided into three categories- 21.1 km, 12 km and 5 km.
Runners moved through the village roads of Mawlynnong, Nohwet, Rewai and Nongeitniang.
It was a mixed marathon in which runners ran on village roads and trails and at one point had to cross across the root bridge located in a pristine environment.
The event was supported by Tourism department of Meghalaya, Social Empowerment department of Meghalaya, DC East Khasi Hills, SDO (Civil) Pynursla, Shillong Press Club and the Mawlynnong village and the surrounding villages.
The event was flagged off at 6.18 am by the SDO (Civil) Pynursla E.L.Warjri in presence of SR Chowdhury (Retd. Assistant Director, Ministry of Tourism, GoI, Eastern region).
One of the highlights of the event was the participation of 50 runners from Bangladesh.
In the 21.1 km female category, DARISHISHA IANGJUH (in picture) won in the female category with a timing of 01.53.53 hour, BANDASHARAI MARWEIN came in second with a timing of 02.01.11 and IBANRIAKOR LYNGKHOI came in third with a timing of 02.12.06.
In the senior female category, KMOIN WAHLANG (74) came in first with a timing of 02.12.32. In the senior category, JEFFERSON KHARNAIOR (55) came in first with a timing of 01.55.26.
In the 21.1 km male category, JOMSINGSTAR RAMSIEJ crossed the finish line first with a timing of 01.22.42, BATSRANG A SANGMA came in second with a timing of 01.25.01 and REVALDO RYNJAH third with a timing of 01.32.35.

This was the initiative of Sportive- a sports tourism venture rom Kolkata by Uttam Dhar, who wanted to promote marathon tourism, first ever in India to showcase lesser known or offbeat places under Dekho Apna Desh for responsible and better tourism in different terrains like beach, forest, jungle, desert, hill all over India through out the year.
