MDM workers call off strike after pay hike assurance
Shillong, Aug 31: The All Meghalaya Midday Meal Workers Union (AMMMWU) on Wednesday temporarily called off its protest and gave the state government time till November to complete the process for enhancing the honorarium, said advisor to the union KL Pariat.
The union delegation met government representatives on Wednesday in the presence of Commissioner & Secretary of Education Dr BDR Tiwari. The former was assured that their monthly honorarium will be hiked.
Pariat said the agitation will start in December if the government fails to fulfil the demand.
He said the education department had informed the delegation that it had already submitted a proposal for enhancement on August 11.
The demand was to enhance the monthly honorarium to cook cum helpers from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 from April to November, 2022, and for the month of February to March, 2023.
There are over 18,776 cook cum helpers.
“Once the Cabinet approves the proposal, the midday meal cooks in Meghalaya will get Rs 2,000 from the state government and Rs 1,000 from the centre,” he said, adding that the government also assured to pay the honorarium for 12 months.
