Meghalaya Mahila Congress condemns Assam CM

Shillong, April 30: Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress ( MPMC) has condemned the disgraceful remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa against women.
During the panchayat poll campaigns, Himanta referred to women going any extent to get government jobs during the tenure of the Congress for 15 years in Assam.
In a statement issued on Wednesday,Joplyn S.Shylla, President,Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress said that the MPMC registered its objection and outrage over the recent ‘disgraceful and insensitive remarks made by Assam Chief Minister which constituted a direct attack on the dignity, respect, and status of women across the region.
“The statement made by Sarma is not only unacceptable but also reflects a deeply misogynistic mindset, unbecoming of someone holding a constitutional position. His words are an affront to the values of equality, respect, and decency that our democracy upholds”, she said.
At a time when the nation is striving to empower women in every sphere—be it education, leadership, or social justice—such derogatory remarks are a setback to the collective efforts of women across the Northeast and the country, he said.
The Mahila Congress has demanded an immediate public apology from Assam CM and urged the Election Commission and relevant constitutional bodies to take cognizance of his statement and initiate appropriate action.
She also called upon women across political lines to stand united against such demeaning narratives that seek to silence and undermine women.
“We also appeal to the people of Meghalaya and the Northeast to reject such toxic political discourse and stand for dignity, respect, and true leadership.Women are not tools for political slander. We are the backbone of society, and we will not be silenced or belittled”, she added.
