Members concerned over overloaded trucks

Shillong, Sept 15: Opposition MLA Zenith Sangma on Thursday questioned the government for allowing more truck load on Garobadha-Dalu-Mahendraganj road than the permissible limit.

Sangma also pointed out that the damaged road, a result of the uncontrolled plying on the crucial connecting road, has been the cause of several accidents, many of which were fatal.

“Now, trucks carrying 38-42 MT load are allowed when the permissible limit is only 12 MT,” he added.

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong replied that the companies manufacturing the trucks have new models and it was not considered when the bridge was constructed.

The discussion was part of the question hour and TMC MLA Winnerson Sangma wanted to know the causes for damage to the road, which is a lifeline running from Garobadha, via Dalu, Ampari, Zikzak to Mahendraganj.

Tynsong said the state government has sanctioned Rs 4.42 crore for taking up major repairing of the road from Garobadha to Dalu via Ampati Zikzak-Mahendraganj and Purakhasia.
A proposal in this regard will be submitted to the Centre for converting it to national highway.
“We are giving special attention to this road. That is why from the state fund we have already sanctioned Rs 4.42 crore and will also accord additional sanction of Rs 5.29 crore for taking up major repairing of the important road,” he added.
