Shillong, Dec 6: United Democratic Party chief Metbah Lyngdoh has no plan to contest from two seats in the 2023 Assembly polls.
“I will contest from one seat only. Why should I contest from two seats?” Lyngdoh asked while replying to a query on the matter.
The Mairang legislator said the idea of him contesting from two seats was fabricated by someone ‘but there is nothing of that sort’.
Speculation was that he may also contest from Mawphlang constituency, which is represented by Eugeneson Lyngdoh, who recently announced his decision not to join the 2023 fray.
Metbah said the party already has a candidate from Mawphlang.
Bindo Lanong
To a query on party’s chief advisor Bindo M Lanong as he was denied ticket from Nongkrem constituency, Lyngdoh said, “We are not neglecting anyone. We have full respect for everyone but at the end of the day everybody has to work for the party.”
He refused to comment on Bindo’s threat to float a new party and said, “What is written in the paper I will not come to a conclusion as far as that version is concerned. I have no comment.”
“We are working as a party as a team. The announcement of 32 candidates, this speaks that the party is united. We have differences but we sort out within the party. That is the internal matter of the party. Anybody has the freedom to express anything within the party,” he said.
No anti-incumbency
The UDP president said that he doesn’t see anti-incumbency will affect the party’s prospects in 2023.
“Whenever there are some doubts which we feel that yes from the party side we see that there is something wrong somewhere when we feel this is a genuine allegation then it has to go into these kinds of enquiries,” he said when reacting to allegations of corruption levelled against the MDA government.
