Minister assures to lift garbage from Jowai

Shillong, March 9: The waste disposal issue was once again raised in Assembly on Wednesday.

During the question hour, HM Shangpliang pointed out that though the government assured to remove the garbage in Jowai, nothing was done.

To this, the urban and municipal affairs minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said by this evening, the garbage will be lifted.

Earlier, Nujorki Sungoh (UDP) wanted to know the initiative taken by the government to set up a landfill site for Jowai.

Saleng Sangma (NCP) said the government should also explore utilising garbage for alternative purpose.

Other members wanted to know the garbage management system in district headquarters.

Assistance to farmersĀ 

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the government will disburse over Rs 200 crore financial assistance under FOCUS to over 80,000 farmers across the state.

Replying to a question by PT Sawkmie( Cong) in the Assembly, Sangma said the amount will be disbursed within this financial year.

He said 26,867 out of 81,988 farmers have received the cash support and the rest will also be receiving in the coming days. Rs 5,000 was given to each farmer through the producer groups.

The total disbursement so far is Rs 13.43 crore.

“We expect to have another Rs 150 crore in the next financial year,” he said.

The financial assitance can be used as working capital, as transportation expenditure and others as per decision of the producer groups.

Health sub-centres

Health & Family Welfare Minister JamesĀ  Sangma said that the setting up of health sub-centres at Umktieh and Nongtraw village is under examination by the government.

The feasibility report from the District Medical & Heallth Officer, Ri Bhoi is still awaited, Sangma said in response to a question by George Lyngdoh (AITC).

George wanted to know the reason for the delay to submit the feasibility report.

Sangma said the preparation of the feasibility report does take time.

“The feasibility report is to find out whether the proposal conforms to the kind of requirement that are there for selection of location as a sub centre,” he said.

He also assured to get the matter examined while maintaining that the approval is subject to the report when Lyngdoh requested him to look into the matter and ensure the health sub centres are set up at the earliest.
