Mishra suggests prioritising green conservation in Meghalaya

Shillong, Oct 9: BD Mishra, Governor of Arunachal Pradesh with additional charge of Meghalaya, on Sunday said on Sunday that Meghalaya should prioritise conservation of the environment as a large section of the population depends on agriculture.

Speaking at the 70th Plenary of North Eastern Council (NEC) in Guwahati, Mishra said climate change and anthropogenic conditions have put the State under severe strain as 80% of the state population is dependent on natural resources for sustaining varied forms of agro-based livelihoods.

He also said the North East has undergone “a huge transformation over the last few years” and this has been possible for “the immense hard work that has been put by the respective state governments and the high priority being accorded by the Government of India to the developmental needs and aspirations of the region”.

“Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for ‘Act East’ has given a major thrust to progress in the region, as a result of which various pending infrastructure projects are being taken up and completed on war-footing,” he added.
