Modi to have bilateral talks with Biden during Washington visit

New Delhi, Sept 16 (UNI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden during his visit to Washington for the first in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit on September 24, and there is a likelihood of bilateral meetings with the other Quad leaders — Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan, “time permitting”, the MEA said on Thursday.

“While the Prime Minister is in Washington, he will also have a bilateral meeting with President Biden. We also look forward to bilateral meetings with other Quad leaders, time permitting, as well as bilateral meetings with some other leaders while he is in New York on September 25,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said at a media briefing here.

Prime Minister Modi will participate in the first in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit in Washington on September 24, and on September 25 he will address the General Debate of the High-Level Segment of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Asked whether there would be a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping while in New York, the spokesperson said that the “bilaterals are still being worked out”.

To a question of any major outcomes expected from the Quad meeting, he said: “Let’s us not prejudge the whole thing. The objective of this is the first in-person Quad meeting. The Quad has its own dynamics, so let’s see what comes out of it,” he added.
