Mother of twin minor victims of Nongrah longed for reunion with husband

Shillong,June 19: Almost three weeks after the death of her two minor children in Nongrah, the mother said she had expected a reunion with her husband once he comes out of the spell of alcoholism.

The husband, Joefreeson Jana, is currently in judicial custody for killing the two children and she is still clueless as to what led her husband to harm them.

During a visit to her residence on Sunday, the mother said her husband had alcoholic problem and hence  she wanted him to reform.

On May 27 morning as she came out of the house to go to NEIGRIHMS where she was working as a helper, Jana had confronted her and dragged her.

This angered her to call the police who wanted her to come to Rynjah police station to lodge a complaint.

She along with her sister and mother-in-law met the police at Rynjah but instead of receiving the complaint, the police offered to counsel him and arrange a doctor.

The women’s commission has already sought action against the police for not accepting the complaint.

“The police said that one Dr Passah would be able to help but as they could not contact him, they arranged another doctor. I had written a complaint but police did not take it and hence we came back”, she said.

Recently, the mother of the accused and the family showed prescription written by a doctor who treated him.

The family also bought a lot of medicines meant to keep him clam as he was mentally  disturbed.

When contacted, the doctor refused to divulge the details of the patient he treated.

The couple, both aged 29, got married in 2017.

The wife said as the husband was staying separately at his mother’s house due to the issue of domestic violence arising out of alcoholism, she was ready to accept him once he is out of rehabilitation.

Differences cropped up last year July as the wife could not tolerate his alcoholic abuse anymore compelling him to stay at his mother’s house which is close to her house.

However, the children used to meet him and he used to take them out but she did not suspect anything.

“I only wanted him to reform and  even now I don’t understand what prompted him to kill our own children”, she added.

Assembly panel meet

The Assembly committee on women empowerment will meet on Monday to discuss the matter and the police officers are expected to attend the meeting after the panel had summoned them.

Ampareen Lyngdoh MLA is the chairperson of the committee.

The panel had sought the details of the incident recorded by them on the day when the mother along with others went to lodge a complaint with the police.

It also wanted the details of all reports filed before Rynjah police station on domestic violence and the report on missing children.

The status of action taken report was also sought by the committee.
