Mukroh firing: NHRC asks for final status reports by June 11

Shillong, May 16: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the governments of Assam and Meghalaya and the Centre to submit final status reports on the Mukroh firing incident, which happened last November, by June 11.

The direction last month came following a re-appeal for justice to the commission by the Trinamool Congress.

NHRC on February 21 had issued orders to Assam and Meghalaya as well as to the Centre to submit a status report regarding the investigation.

TMC, through its national spokesperson Saket Gokhale, had filed a case against Assam and Meghalaya with NHRC in November 2022 after the firing incident that killed five villagers.

“TMC will keep following up on this case relentlessly with the NHRC and demand strict action against the governments of Assam and Meghalaya and the Government of India if the final report is not submitted by the deadline,” TMC said in a statement.

“The inordinate delay in providing justice to the victims… is shameful and reflects the utter disregard of the governments of Assam and Meghalaya towards the lives of the tribals of Meghalaya,” it added.
