Mukul takes up illegal extraction of stones for road project

Shillong, May 14: Leader of Opposition and Songsak legislator Mukul Sangma has raised illegal quarrying and environmental harm due to the widening of the Darugre-Songsak-Williamnagar section of NH-127B.
He also pointed out unchecked dumping of excavated materials thereby polluting rivers.
In a letter addressed to East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner RP Marak, Conrad said the NHIDC is widening the 36.635-km stretch of NH-127B, but added that the contractor’s activities had gone beyond the sanctioned work. “The contractor has deviated from the scope of work permissible under the original DPR and resorted to illegal, unscientific extraction of stones/boulders from the under-surface of the land along the alignment of road,” he said.
According to Mukul, the illegal extraction of stones/boulders is not accidental, but is found to be pre-determined and intentional which violates the provision of MMDR Act 1957.
He also pointed out unchecked dumping of excavated materials.
He alleged that the contractor was engaging in rampant and careless dumping of the debris and huge quantity of extra-earth with serious negative impact on the environment.
