New dome design finalised; structure to be lighter than previous one

Shillong, Oct 31: The High Powered Committee (HPC) for the construction of the new Assembly building has finalised the design for the dome.

Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh told reporters after a meeting of the HPC members on Monday that of the four designs, one has been chosen and this would be much lighter than the previous structure that collapsed on May 22 this year.

“The previous dome was 3,000 tonnes. The new one will be a tenth of that, which is around 300 tonnes,” Lyngdoh said.

After the collapse, Ransom Sutnga, then executive engineer at PWD (building), had said the previous design was faulty and the structure was too heavy to be supported by the pillars.

The design details will be submitted to the government within 30-45 days. This will be vetted first by IIT Roorkee and then by IIT Guwahati.

Lyngdoh also said that the IIT Guwahati findings on the collapse of the previous dome show lack of coordination among the contractors and the PMC.
