NGOs seek action against doctor; minister anguished
Shillong, July 20: After a doctor in Williamnagar refused to treat a minor rape victim on Monday, the pressure groups have sought action against him, while the social welfare minister Kyrmen Shylla expressed concern over the matter.
The GSU and FKJGP wrote to the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday urging him to take action against the doctor citing medical negligence.
Later, anguished over the matter, Shylla told reporters that he will seek a report from the health department regarding the matter as humanitarian gesture is more important.
According to media reports, instead of treating the rape victim at Williamnagar civil hospital, the doctor referred her to Baghmara civil hospital.
The health department is yet to clarify on the matter though a query on action against the doctor was made by this reporter.
