Night curfew only in 1 km radius of Bangladesh border in EKH

DC issues restriction from 8 pm to 6 am to prevent entry of militants, smugglers

Shillong, May 8: Night curfew has been imposed in one km radius of International Border in East Khasi Hills from May 8.

Earlier on May 7 evening, there was a confusion after the Information and Public Relations Department issued an order of the deputy commissioner who had mentioned night curfew in 5 km radius of the border but the order was cancelled subsequently.

In the new order issued on May 8, the deputy commissioner said that the purpose is to prevent infiltration by the armed groups (militants) and smugglers.

ORDER UNDER SECTION 163 BNSS

Whereas, in view of the current situation in Bangladesh, there is every likelihood of cross border movement of unwanted elements, members of proscribe militant groups, smugglers and any other illegal activities on Indo-Bangladesh Border;

And whereas, the bordering areas in East Khasi Hills being unfenced is highly prone to infiltration by illegal migrants, members of organized crime having linkage to anti-national elements including armed insurgent groups who may gather in large numbers near the international border during the night hours to continue their nefarious activities:

And whereas, such illegal/undesirable activities if not prevented may lead to uncontrollable cross border infiltration resulting in breach of peace and tranquility in the District/State and Country as a whole.

Now, therefore, I, Smti. R.M. Kurbah, IAS, District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong in exercise of the powers conferred upon me under section 163 BNSS do hereby imposed night curfew from 8:00 PM to 6:00 A.M. within a radius of 1 (one) Kilometre from the Zero Line (International Border) as the crow fly prohibits the following :-

(i) Movement of people at the International Border with the intention to cross the international boundary with Bangladesh or sneak into the Indian Territory.

(ii) Unauthorized procession or unlawful assembly of 5 (five) or more persons and carrying arms/other instruments which can be used as weapons including sticks/rods and stones in and around the Indo-Bangladesh Border.

(iii) Illegal, undesirable activities including smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betelnut, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, chai patti, etc.

In view of the urgency of the matter this order has been made ex-parte and it shall come into force with immediate effect and remain in force for a period of 2 (two) months from the date of issue of this Order.
