No arrest yet in army officer’s sexual harassment case

Shillong, March 14: Police are yet to make any arrest after a complaint of alleged criminal intimidation & sexual harassment was made against an army officer.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said no arrest has been made as the investigation was still on.
According to the FIR registered with Madanryting police station, in the city, the 36-year-old lady, who is the wife of a Colonel here, narrated her ordeal and sought action against a Brigadier, who is the Commandant, Assam Regiment Centre,(ARC) Happy Valley for subjecting her to harassment and intimidation.
On the night of March 8 this year from 7.40 pm to 5.10 am on March 9 at the Officers’ Mess, ARC, the Brigadietr approached her and started harassing with lewd comments, unwanted aggressive conduct and despite her clear disinterest and requests to stop, the accused continued to harass her.
The complaint filed on March 10 said that on the intervening night of March 8-9 during the dining out function, the Brigadier approached her multiple times with ill intent. He walked up to her and made remarks such as “Why I was not paying attention to him”, “Party bahut boring ho gaya hai na? Apne mujhe dhoka diya hai”. He then used abusive words.
The Brigadier also came charging at her and tried to use criminal force which was timely stopped by her husband. He came towards her with his open arms with an intention to harm her.
She alerted the wife of the Brigadier as the former was scared.
The ncident took place at the Officers’ Mess premises continued for 45 minutes.
Earlier on April 13,2024 at a house warming dinner hosted by another officer, the Brigadier had approached her and made a remark “Why do you dress to kill?”.
On July 13, 2024, during a dinner at her home, the Brigadier tried to use criminal force to outrage her modesty by holding her hand and asking hello madam, hello hello…mera hath toh pakad lo’ in front of her husband which she avoided. Despite this, she had to attend the function on March 8-9 being it official.
The victim said in the FIR that she felt threatened, intimidated and humiliated by his behaviour as he was trying to physically harasss her.
The victim sought immediate action against the Brigadier who is also her next door neighbour.
According to her, there has been a conscious attempt to harm her life, outrage her modesty and sexually harass her and the complaint was after she she was traumatised and it took one day to normalise and finally write the complaint.
