
Shillong, March 14: As many as 21 MDCs of the NPP-led GHADC have expressed a lack of confidence in the leadership of Chief Executive Member (CEM) Albinush Marak.
A no-confidence motion will be moved against the CEM on March 16.
The development comes amid unrest in Garo Hills following the notification of the GHADC CEM on making ST certificates mandatory for the contesting candidates.
The NPP had denied the party ticket to the CEM on February 16.
On February 17, the CEM issued the notification regarding the ST certificates.
According to a notification issued by the District Council Affairs department on March 14, the Governor received a petition from 21 members of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council on March 14, that the Chief Executive Member of the Council has lost the confidence of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.
“Now, therefore in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-rule (5) of Rule 36 of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951, as amended by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, the Governor of Meghalaya is pleased to summon a session of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council to meet on the 16th March, 2026 at 11.00 A.M in the District Council Hall, Tura for conduct of the proceedings under Rule 22(1) and subsequent business as may be necessary in accordance with the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rule 195”, said the notification.
The governor has authorised the Chairman of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council to preside over the session in accordance with the relevant rules of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rule 1951.
