No holiday on counting day; security beefed up

Shillong, June 3: Returning officer for Shillong Lok Sabha seat SC Sadhu said there will not be any holiday for schools and colleges on June 4 but the  authorities have been directed to admit students who come late due to traffic snarl.

Besides Sadhu, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang , CEO BDR Tiwari and other officials inspected the arrangements at Polo Ground for counting of votes on June 4.

Counting will start at 8 am and a total of 369 tables will be used across seven districts under Shillong (ST) PC and 244 tables across 5 districts under 2-Tura (ST) PC. Mawlai Assembly segment will be counted in 9 rounds being the largest in terms of number of electors.

Sadhu said though section 144 CrPC was withdrawn except at the counting centre at Polo Ground, victory processions and rallies should not disturb law and order during the counting of votes.

The returning officer said all arrangements have been made to ensure that counting is done efficiently and in a transparent manner involving all political parties. For law and order, elaborate arrangements in terms of ensuring that no unauthorised persons enter the premises of the counting, have been made

Both the chief secretary and chief electoral officer said for 12 counting centres for  Shillong and Tura parliamentary constituencies, multi-layer security arrangements have been made.

There will be 8 counting centres for Shillong parliamentary constituency and 5 Tura parliamentary constituency.

18 counting observers have been deployed by the Election Commission of India

The counting of EVMs in Shillong and Tura will start by 8.30 am and in other centres it will be 8 am ,” the chief electoral officer said.

As per protocol, three-layer has been  arranged here. The inner layer is being manned by CAPF and outer layer by the state police and from outer layer, there will be no vehicle zone. Vehicles should not enter the three-layer security area, vehicles with passes only will be allowed within this area,” the returning officer added.
