Shillong, April 7: There is no proposal for recommending Kongthong, East Khasi Hills as a geographical indication (GI).
GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

This information was given by the DoNER Minister G. Kishan Reddy in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday to a question by Rakesh Sinha MP.
As on April 4, 2022, the office of geographical indications registry has registered thirty-five geographical indications applications from the Northeastern region.
Two geographical applications, i.e., Memong Narang and Khasi Mandarin have been registered from Meghalaya.
