One militant shot, three held in Manipur

Imphal, Sept 10 (UNI): The Loktak Battalion of Assam Rifles and Manipur police neutralised one insurgent and apprehended another of the proscribed group Socialist Democratic Front of Kukiland (SDFK) in Churachandpur on Friday.

Based on specific intelligence, troops of Assam Rifles, along with Manipur Police, launched a joint operation.

During the cordon and search operation, an exchange of fire ensued between the security forces and two insurgents hiding in the area. In the firefight one insurgent was neutralised and the other injured.

The injured insurgent was apprehended and evacuated to Imphal for medical treatment.

The deceased insurgent was identified as Letminthang Haokip self-styled C-in-C of SDFK. Three pistols and 282 rounds of 9mm ammunition were recovered from the area.

Police said there were inputs about the activities of Boithang and his group indulging in threatening and serving extortion demand letters to various village chiefs, shops and other business establishments in and around Churachandpur town especially in Tuibong Bazar area in the past one month.

There are also two other cases registered against his name/ gang.

In another incident Mantripukhri Battalion and Manipur Police apprehended two over ground workers (OGW) of proscribed group National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM) from Langol Laimanai area, Imphal East district on September 9.

Both individuals were actively involved in extortion activities on behalf of the proscribed group in Imphal valley.

Apprehended individuals were handed over to Lamphel Police Station for further investigation.
