Only two benefit from Watershed project in EKH village
Shillong,June 12: Ony two persons have benefitted from the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) in Nongpyrdi village under Mawkynrew Block.
The residents, who had sought details regarding the matter through Right Information (RTI) Act ,found out that under the programme from 2011-12 to 2019-20, Rs 13, 53,036 was sanctioned for various projects which are being implemented by the Soil and Water Conservation department.
The residents alleged that only two persons benefited from the initiatives– Brian Nongrum and Master Nongrum, former traditional head of Nongpyrdi village.
Louis Dohtdong, president of Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) alleged that the then Rangbah Shnong had resorted to corruption and deprived the villagers of their rights.
He wanted the government to carry out spot verification to understand the ground position.
The IWMP started in 2011-12 and Rs 1 lakh was meant for entry point activity to Nongpyrdi village.
The nature of work was construction of drinking water well and water distribution works.
Dohtdong said when they went to verify the the construction, nothing was found while the money was paid to the resident of the area, Brian Nongrum.
The HNYM president said as per the RTI findings, in 2012-13, Rs 2 lakh was paid to Master Nongrum, for various works including check dam, contour bund but nothing was found.
The HNYM has asked them to give back the money to the beneficiaries and if not, a case will be filed.
