PB precinct turns chaotic with vehicles plying

Car loses control, hits six-year-old

Shillong, May 3: The Police Bazar precinct that was earlier meant for pedestrians has turned chaotic and precarious for commuters after vehicles have been allowed to ply on the route.

Recently, a six-year-old child was hit by a vehicle when she was returning home with her mother. They are residents of the slum behind Ajmera Complex.

The car that was unloading goods started rolling down towards Dreamland and the driver swerved the car to avoid it. It was then that it hit the child, said a member of a city NGO that works with street children.

“No one came to help her. Then a shop owner, Navin Singhania, volunteered to help. He took the child to hospital in his car,” she said.

Initially, the owner of the car that hit the child had refused to pay for treatment but with the NGO’s intervention, he finally agreed.

Singhania told Meghalaya Monitor that as per the traffic rule, cars are not allowed between 8am and 8 pm “but no one is following this”. There are not many CCTV cameras to monitor the flouting of rules, he informed.

An official source said the police may review the entry of vehicles to the stretch of road.

“When there were restrictions related to Covid, there was less movement of people but with the increase in movement of vehicles and tourists, the government is compelled to make change in the traffic regulation which was planned only to prevent hawkers from occupying the road,” the source added.
