PM pays tribute to state freedom fighters in front of tall Congress monument

Shillong, Feb 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in the city for election campaign on Friday, paid floral tribute to the statues of state freedom fighters U Tirot Sing, U Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma erected in front of the old tall Congress monument.

The triangular Congress monument to respect the state freedom fighters was erected by Late Rajiv Gandhi on December 6, 1985 as per the inscriptions on three sides of the monument acknowledging the contribution of the three heroes who fought against the British.

Last year, the arts and culture department with the initiative of BJP minister in-charge of the department Sanbor Shullai had erected the statues.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had inaugurated the life-size statues in October last year.

The iconic structure remained unattended and the attention falls only on the statues of the state heroes.

The writings on three sides of the structure explaining about the contributions of the freedom fighters have almost becomeĀ  illegible.

Road show attracts citizensĀ 

After paying tributes to the freedom fighters at the Library premises, Modi boarded an open vehicle waving hands to the cheering crowd till Khyndailad.

He addressed a large gathering at Khyndailad amid cheers and chanting of ‘Modi, Modi’ by the crowd.

He called for a change of government devoid of corruption, while expressing happiness over the presence of the party in the state.

He did not make any promises.

Later, he addressed another gathering in Tura seeking support for the party candidates.
