Police bust cough syrup factory; over 9k phensedyl bottles seized, three held

Shillong, Oct 1: Police on Saturday busted a factory producing cough syrup in East Jaintia Hills meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh and arrested three persons involved in the crime.

According to the police, a person identified as Altaf Hussain recently received a consignment of illegal contraband and had hidden it in his godown. Follow this, the staff of Khliehriat police station and the Anti Narcotic Task Force (ANTF)  team were able to find out about his whereabouts and apprehended him besides seizing 9,883 bottles of phensedyl from his godown.

Hussain led the police to the main accused Ratan Dkhar, a resident of Ummulong, who was also arrested. He operated a mini factory at the basement of his house and manufactured spurious cough syrup and branded it as phensedyl for illegal sale to Bangladesh, police added.

It was revealed that Dkhar had two accomplices from Assam. An accomplice of Hussain, Shaheen who helped in transporting the cough syrup to Assam was also arrested

The seized items 

1. 600 bottles of elcodyl cough syrup ( each of 100ml)

2. 10 bottles of flavouring agent (500 ml each)

3. 11 bottles of food colour (1 kg each)

4. 10 kg of Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride ( ingredient of phensedyl)

5. 1 kg of Chlorphenirame Maleato (ingredient of phensedyl)

6. 7 books on pharmacology and drug preparations

7. 34 bottles of phensedyl(100ml)

8. 780 empty 100 ml bottles of phensedyl

9. 46 cartons with phensedyl marked

10. 1 carton of bottle caps

11. 1 plastic of phensedyl labels

12. 1 bottling machine

13. 2 sophisticated machines for drug preparation and filtration
