Police identify gunman killed in Tura

Shillong, Sept 15: The gunman who was killed by the police in West Garo Hills on Wednesday evening has been identified as Robison R Marak of Raksamgre , an overground worker of ASAK , UALA and other militant groups active from 2014 to 2018, according to police.

Later, he was allegedly involved in illegal activities, police added.

A police official said following information on movement of miscreants with sophisticated weapons, police had on Wednesday at 7.30 pm noticed Marak riding a bike coming from Tura-Garobadha road towards the road leading to Dadagiri locality where the police personnel were stationed.

“As it was dark, the police team flashed search light towards the bike and waved hands directing the bike diver to stop”, police said, adding the man jumped from the bike and took out the assault rifle from the bag he was carrying in front and opened fire at the police team . Subsequently, the police resorted to retaliatory firing and after two minutes , the bike rider collapsed and died due to bullet injuries.

Police recovered one AK-56 assault rifle (in picture) and magazine loaded with 7.62 mm ammunition, one bag containing 10 live 7.62 ammunition and one cleaning rod, two live ammunition fromĀ  near the body, one black colour Bajaj platina bike without registration number plate along with a helmet, five empty cartridge cases of 7.62 ammunition and 20 cartridge cases of 9 mm ammunition.

After the post mortem and inquest, police registered a case in Tura police station.

According to the police, the man married in Dolwakgre, under Tikrikilla, was involved in criminal activities like extortion and kidnapping across West Garo Hills.

The police have urged people to provide information regarding anti-social elements disturbing peace in the region by way of extortions and kidnappings.
