Police kill ex-HNLC leader Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew after ‘knife’ attack

Shillong, Aug 13: Police killed surrendered HNLC general secretary Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew at his residence at Kynton Massar, Mawlai on Friday early hours.
According to police, in connection with the bomb blast in Khliehriat case, a joint operation by East Khasi Hills and East Jaintia Hills police was conducted around 3 am at the residence of Thangkhiew at Kynton Massar.
Thangkhiew surrendered before deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong in 2018.
“The moment police team tried to enter into his house to conduct house search Chesterfield attacked the police party with the knife. In self defence, one shot was fired and later Chesterfield was shifted to Civil Hospital for emergency treatment”, police said. The attending doctor declared him brought dead.
Two other persons have been detained for further questioning at Sadar Police Station.
According to the police, many incriminating evidences have been seized which include one pistol, one knife, several phones and one laptop.
“All the clothes including cap, jacket, shoes etc matching with the video clip have seized in presence of independent witnesses”, the police said.
