Police lathi charge to quell protests over boat capsize in Majuli
Guwahati, Sept 9 (UNI): Assam police on Thursday resorted to lathi charge to quell the protestors in Assam’s Majuli who were protesting over the incident of a boat capsizing.
Locals came out in large numbers on Thursday after the tragic incident as they surrounded Power Minister Bimal Borah, as he tried to pacify the agitators.
The protestors alleged that there are no tickets given to the passengers on the boats and no life jackets provided for their safety.
They also said politicians were making false promises about making a bridge. The situation got tense with protesters tried to break a barricade. The police and paramilitary personnel used force to disperse the crowd.
Two persons lost their lives and two more were missing after a private boat with 90 people onboard capsized and sank in Brahmaputra on Wednesday evening, following a head-on collision with a government-owned ferry near Nimati Ghat in Jorhat district.
