Police recover 280 packets of ganja

Shillong, Mar 4: Police recovered 280 bags of ganja weighing 4,746. 409 kgs from Ri Bhoi on Sunday.

Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi District said that in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections, intensive checking was done at Lad Umsaw by joint team of Ri-Bhoi district executive force and the CRPF battalion and on March 3, credible information was received that a truck (NL 01-AH-5853) was suspected of carrying illegal contraband. Subsequently, on the same evening the vehicle was detained at the check point along with the suspects. Further, after observing all formalities under the provision of NDPS Act and in the presence of the independent witnesses search of the vehicle was conducted and 280 packets of suspected ganja (marijuana) was recovered. Preliminary test of the suspected contraband was conducted and gave positive result for ganja (marijuana), weighing 4,746. 409 kgs.

In this regard, a case under appropriate sections of NDPS Act is being registered at Umiam PS and investigation is on to trace the backward and forward linkages, the SP added.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma congratulated the team.

“Delighted to share the phenomenal job by the @ribhoipolice! They’ve unearthed a hidden stash – a whopping 4750kgs of pure grade marijuana, worth a staggering Rs.20 crore from a truck yesterday night! This goes without saying that this huge bust has prevented a tidal wave of harm, protecting countless lives and communities from the destructive grip of drugs”, the CM said.
