Shillong, Feb 29: Police have started a cyber probe into the alleged extortion drive by the HNLC via WhatsApp while a senior police official is camping in Garo Hills to address the issue of alleged regrouping of GNLA.
In response to media reports regarding the matter, DGP LR Bishnoi said on Thursday that the cyber wing is examining the alleged distribution of extortion notes to several residents in the state via WhatsApp.
“We have entrusted the matter to the cyber wing , but our appeal to the people is that if they receive the demand notes to report the matter to the police at the earliest”, the DGP said.
The media reports said that while some have already paid to a messenger, others are clueless as to what to do next since it came from a number from Bangladesh.
On the regrouping of GNLA, the DGP said the IG law and order is camping in Garo Hills to assess the situation and to talk to people.
“The statements are coming on social media but we need to verify and we are looking into the matter”, he said, seeking people’s support.
