Presidential nominee seeks votes from MLAs, MPs

Shillong, July 6: The presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu arrived in Umiam, Ri Bhoi to meet MLAs and seek support for the election to be held on July 18.

The event held at Orchid Lake resort organised by the BJP was attended by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma,Union Ministers, Sarbanada  Sonowal, Pratima Bhoumik and Rajya Sabha member WR Kharlukhi among others.

Tura MP Agatha Sangma was absent.

The media persons were asked to cover only the felicitation programme and the presidential candidate did not speak to  journalists.

Sources said the speakers harped on electing a tribal president for the country which will be a record of sorts in the history of India.

“As President, Smti. Draupadi Ji will represent a New India. She represents hope for every tribal, every girl & every woman & will carry with her the aspirations of small communities of India. We are proud of her & wish her all the best for the upcoming Presidential Election”, Conrad  tweeted.
