‘Proposed NE alliance not a threat to Cong’

Shillong, Nov 12:The Congress does not see the proposed North East alliance as a threat.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Tipra Motha party leader Pradyot Dev Barma met recently in Delhi to ally with like-minded parties.
Speaking to reporters, the state Congress leaders ruled out any threat to the Congress
Secretary of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Manuel Badwar asserted that there is no threat to the party and added that the move reflects the failure of the BJP saying, “Most of the regional parties have realised that they are not going to get anywhere by being friends with the BJP and for which they feel that they have to form a new front. Whether that new front is good or bad, history will decide, not us.”
Regarding NE regional parties keeping equal distance from the Congress and BJP, Badwar said that is their philosophy of how they want to do things.
“As of right now, I think it is not such a good idea… if you start a new party, it will cost you a lot of money, most of which will have to come from Meghalaya, and I don’t think the public at large will accept that,” he said.
More to join the party
Congress Working President Deborah Marak announced that several leaders, including some from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), are set to join the Congress.
“There are many; they are joining one by one. So, we are getting ready. There are certain things in politics we must keep secret. When the time comes, we will tell you,” Marak said.

Secretary of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Manuel Badwar said the mood of the public at large is definitely favourable which means that the Congress will revive.
“No matter how much people criticize, no matter how much people talk against the party, the public is showing a tangent altogether; it is moving in a different direction”, he added.
According to Badwar, while many are eager to join, the party will exercise discretion.“It doesn’t mean everybody will join or will be allowed to join. We have to filter, depending on the kind of people joining and whether they are opportunistic in nature or they are joining because they firmly believe.”, he said.
