Protest against Block complex opening in Mawpat over minimum wages

Shillong, July 21: An angry mob in Mawpat here prevented two cabinet ministers, AT Mondal and AL Hek, who is also the local MLA, from opening the Integrated Block Development Complex at Mawpat, on Monday.
The protest was since the casual and contractual employees were being paid meager salaries, ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 in the absence of the implementation of minimum wages.
Mondal, who is the community and rural development minister, said the grievances of the community will be addressed.
Hek wondered as to why the Dorbar Shnong did not inform him about their problems before the opening of the complex.
Headman of Mawpat Judah Wahlang wanted the government to give a written assurance so that the villagers could attend the inauguration of the C&RD block office.
