Rape case hearing again on June 14, police yet to summon MLA
Shillong, June 11: The investigation officer (IO) is yet to summon or record the statement of rape accused NPP MLA, Thomas Sangma.
Sources said that the stand of the police is that the custody of the MLA is not required since he is ‘cooperating’.
Sources have expressed concern over police not questioning the MLA besides not objecting to the bail application moved by him.
According to sources, the public prosecutor should have objected to the bail application moved by the MLA considering the serious nature of the crime.
When contacted, the public prosecutor said he cannot comment on the submission made by him before the court.
The additional district and sessions judge had granted interim-pre-arrest bail to the MLA on June 8.
Later, hearings were held on June 10 and 11 and the matter will be again taken up on June 14.
The victim, residing in the city, had lodged the compliant on June 1 stating that the MLA had raped her multiple times and assured to marry her after she became pregnant.
Following this, the police registered a case under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 506 ( criminal intimidation).
