Yeahya Hussain, the uncle of one of the missing miners, 26-year-old Anowarul Islam Barbhuiya (Sahar), told Meghalaya Monitor on phone on Monday that it was on Saturday that Barbhuiya spoke about his work at the mine.

Barbhuiya, son of Siraj Uddin, is a native of Nazatpur village under Katigorah police station, Cachar. He left home for work after the Assam Assembly elections along with a co-worker from Karimganj, Hussain said.

“Anowarul would often visit Meghalaya for odd jobs to run his family. He told me that he worked with a mason. He had studied till Class VIII,” he added.

Barbhuiya joined work on Sunday when the accident happened.

“We got the information about it from the workers who were engaged in coal mining in the nearby quarries,” the relative said.

He also deplored the authorities’ sluggishness in recovering the body and expressed the inability of the family members to go to East Jaintia Hills due to lockdown.

“We need the body of our relative at the earliest”, he said.
