
Shillong, June 8: The reservation committee headed by retired justice Mool Chand Garg of High Court of Madhya Pradesh has submitted its report to the state government.
An official source said the report was submitted to Chief Secretary DP Wahlang in New Delhi on June 6.
The source added that since the report is voluminous running to 500 pages, it will take time to study and make it public.
Protests led by VPP chief Ardent Basaiawmoit had compelled the state government to constitute the committee on June 1, 2023.
The government notified the chairman and members of the panel with a deadline of one year to complete the job after examining the reservation resolution dated January 12,1972.
The committee received varied views, including status-quo and review-from several groups and political parties.
Besides the chairman, the members of the committee were retired justice of Allahabad High Court and expert in constitutional law, Dr Satish Chandra, professor, department of sociology, NEHU, DV Kumar, professor, department of fertility and social demography, India Institute of Population Sciences , Mumbai, Chander Shekhar and assistant professor of economics and public policy in IIM, Shillong Shubhadip Mukherjee.
The task of the committee was to study the state reservation policy and recommend modifications if necessary, to hold consultations with all stakeholders and visit locations of the state to solicit views of the stakeholders.
The report was prepared after several sittings and public hearings in Shillong and Tura.
