Retired justice Mool Chand Garg to head panel to review reservation policy in state

Shillong, Aug 25: Retired justice Mool Chand Garg of High Court of Madhya Pradesh will head the expert committee to review the reservation policy in the state.

Garg was earlier led the commission that probed the rice scam in the state.

Besides Garg as the chairman, the members  include retired justice of Allahabad High Court and expert in constitutional law Dr Satish Chandra,  professor, department of sociology, NEHU DV Kumar, professor, department of fertility and social demography, India Institute of Population Sciences , Mumbai, Chander Shekhar and assistant professor of economics and public policy in IIM, Shillong Shubhadip Mukherjee.

The commiteee will have to complete the task in 12 months.

The terms of reference are to study the current reservation policy and recommend modifications if necessary, to undertake wide-ranging consultations with all stakeholders and visit various locations of the state to solicit views of the stakeholders.

When asked why the panel does not have indigenous members, cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that it was to avoid bias since the matter pertains to Khasi-Jaintia and Garo communities.
