Sanbor opens link road behind human rights commission office
Mini road project costs over Rs 3 crore

Shillong, April 4: Cabinet Minister and South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai has opened the MBT of link road behind Human Rights Commission office here, on Saturday.
The 0.185-kilometer road was developed with Rs 3.36 crore under the state plan assistance.
“This scheme was jointly initiated by the MDA government under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and myself. I would like to express thanks to all people of Shillong South constituency and top PWD officials who are the ground force to architect this mini bypass,” he said.
He said the land for the project was with the Arunachal Pradesh government, and the MDA government had moved the government of Arunachal Pradesh through the officials of Arunachal secretariat to develop the road.
Shillong-Dawki project
Commenting on the Shillong-Dawki road project, Shullai said it is has the potential to become a crucial component of the pan-Asia integrated intermodal transport system.
“The project road is part of Asian Highway (AH) and has the potential to become an important building block for pan-Asia integrated intermodal transport system,” Shullai said after opening the link road.
“Once the project road is completed, there will be improved connectivity with Bangladesh and contribute to the growth in international trade.The project is expected to boost tourism in the region by improving access to popular destinations like Shillong peak, Elephant Falls, Dawki, Cherrapunji, and Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village.It will improve access to tourist destinations, promoting tourism in the region,” Shullai said.
The 71-km Shillong-Dawki corridor is being developed with a 2-lane Paved Shoulder configuration, with 4-laning provisions in certain stretches. The total project cost is Rs 2,171 crore, including land acquisition and other expenses.The project is divided into 5 packages, with 4 out of 5 projects sanctioned in 2020.
The projects faced delays due to land unavailability and public utility issues. “With constant effort, the hindrances were resolved, and the 4 projects were re-started between October 2022 to May 2023,” Shullai said.
The project timeline varies, with Package 1 (Rilbong to Mylliem Marbaniang) nearing completion with 90% progress, while Package 5 (Umsyiem to Tamabil), including the iconic Dawki Bridge, is expected to be completed by 2027.
Package 3 (Pynursla Bypass) is set to start in April 2026 and finish by 2028, he added.
