SC asks Centre, states to speed up registration of migrant workers
New Delhi, May 24 (UNI): The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre and states to expedite registration of migrant workers so that they can draw the benefits extended to them amid the pandemic times.
A bench of justices Ashok Bhushan and M R Shah said the benefit of schemes meant for migrants can be extended after they are identified and registered by authorities.
“The process of registration is very slow. We are not happy with the efforts undertaken by the Centre and states on registration of unorganised workers,” LiveLaw quoted the bench as saying.
“Registration of unorganised workers first needs to be completed. As of today, the migrants have to go for registration. What we want is that these people should go to the migrants. It should be two-way. The machinery should reach the migrants,” it added.
The bench asked the Centre to file a counter-affidavit on the position of the National Database for Unorganised Workers (NDUW).
