Like last year, the anniversary of Awami League, the leading party in the liberation war of Bangladesh, is being celebrated in the shadow of Coronavirus. As a result, outdoor activities have been limited.

Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sent out a message on the occasion saying, “The aim of Awami League is to establish the country as the Golden Bangladesh, and the Bengalis as a self-respecting nation in the world. I firmly believe that no one will be able to hold us back if the party has a strong organisational structure and the practice of democracy is intact.”

This is the first time in the 72-year history that the party has been in government for three consecutive terms. The Awami League government has achieved a lot in an era of continuous state power.

After independence, the Awami League first ruled the country for three years under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. After that, the party went through 21 years of struggle from the opposition. In the 1996 elections, the party came to power again under the leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina. Since then, the Awami League has been in charge of the country for two consecutive decades since 2009.
